Sharon’s Story: Out With Yo-Yo Diets, In With Zumba

Sharon always had a passion for fitness and health, but struggled with her weight. After years of yo-yo dieting, she finally decided to take care of herself and be the fit, healthy person she always wanted to be. Here is Sharon’s story.

I’ve always been fitness and health-minded (it was even one of my majors in college), but I finally realized that I couldn’t go to Zumba class and then come home and eat a bag of candy corn. I’ve always been active, but for me, I realized that reaching and maintaining a healthy weight meant eating a balanced diet to complement all the hard work I was doing. I have lost a total of 35lbs and counting and I feel GREAT!

I go to the Henderson Lifestyle Family Fitness location several times a week. I like to change things up by working out on the elliptical machine and lifting weights. However, my favorite is Dilara’s Wednesday night Zumba class! I love Zumba so much that when I have to go out of town, I make sure to find a gym or club that offers Zumba in the area. I love it so much, I want to start teaching!

For my diet, I found a meal plan that works best for me; it consists of five to six mini-meals a day, two of which are ViSalus shakes. The program is based in nutrition that helps you burn fat and keep lean muscle, boosts your metabolism and control hunger. In turn it helps me make better food choices in my diet. Some of my other “go-to” snacks are almonds, hummus and tons of veggies. My favorite place to eat is Jason’s Deli. I love their Turkey wrap and salad bar!

I used to be goal-driven with my diet and exercise plan, but I found that it actually causes me more stress than anything and I would resort to emotional eating if I missed a goal or had a bad day. Now I just live one day at a time and realize this is not a diet—this is how I am living my life! I do weigh myself once a week to make sure I am still heading in the right direction.

For anybody out there who is trying to get healthy my advice is stick to it and don’t give up! Don’t stress out if you mess up here and there. Just get back on track.
